Over the past years, the UAE has become a major playground for Israeli cyber warfare companies, which are run by senior officers of the Hebrew intelligence service (Mossad).

The issue did not stop at the mere spread of Israeli companies inside the Emirates and their supervision, in one way or another, of the rapprochement between the Israeli and Emirati Internet sectors.

Rather, it extended to take the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, the de facto ruler of the Emirates, Mohammed bin Zayed, from the heads of the Mossad, such as Tamir Pardo, as an essential partner in these complex transactions.

This suspicious cooperation reached extreme levels in espionage, targeting activists and human rights defenders, and establishing a sophisticated network capable of threatening regional security as a whole.

UAE and Mossad

In early November 2021, the French magazine Intelligence Online, which deals with intelligence affairs, revealed new coordinates in the cyber cooperation between the UAE and Israel, which has already existed for many years before the official normalization in 2020.

“The Beacon Red company, which is affiliated with the Emirati defense group (Edge Group), recently announced a partnership with the (XM Cyber) company, owned by former Mossad chief Tamir Pardo,” the French magazine said.

“They will work closely on managing security vulnerabilities in the UAE, after they announced their partnership on October 17, 2021, during GITEX Technology Week, which was held in Dubai,” it added.

As a continuation of the joint Emirati-Israeli cooperation in this field, Intelligence Online reported that “the new partnership will clearly focus on managing vulnerabilities in the UAE.”

The Emirati Beacon Red will use the expertise of the Israeli XM Cyber in attack methods to identify the most vulnerable vulnerabilities in the UAE.

The Israeli company is doing well in Europe and the United States, and it is keen to strengthen its brand in the Middle East, according to the French magazine.

Beacon Red

The Emirati Beacon Red, which leads the axis of cyber partnership with Israel, was established in 2018. It is the successor to the company Dark Matter, which was the pioneer in the field of cyber-attacks in the UAE and is supervised by Mohammed bin Zayed.

Beacon Red has absorbed a large number of executives into Dark Matter, including the company's CEO, Mauricio de Almeida, while the latter's activities have shrunk.

“Dark Matter, which specializes in cyber and hybrid warfare consultancy, based its strategy on Australian and American cyber expertise, by appointing a large number of veterans in the field of intelligence and defense such as the head of the Department of Defense and the Internet, the American officer Eric Everett,” the French magazine pointed out.

But Beacon Red took a different course, as it turned strongly to the Israeli experts and Mossad officers, taking advantage of the atmosphere of the normalization of Emirati-Israeli diplomatic relations.

Beacon Red seeks to have a role beyond the borders of its country, as it stated on its official website, that it will make most of its focus on raising the level of preparedness to maintain national security throughout the Middle East as a whole.

The company has great potential, with revenues exceeding $5 billion annually, 12,000 employees, in addition to 25 subsidiary companies; therefore, its entry into distant partnerships with the Mossad is worrisome.

Bin Zayed's Friend

Tamir Pardo, 68, the former Mossad chief (2010-2016), is a prominent Israeli intelligence officer for decades, and has advanced relations with Mohammed bin Zayed since he was in his sensitive position.

In September 2018, the Israeli Channel 13 revealed what it described as the secrets of relations between Israel and the Arab Gulf states, where it broadcast an episode dealing with the relationship with the UAE, especially the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The channel revealed the role that Pardo played in re-communicating with the UAE, following a political crisis that occurred in 2009, and following the failure of a sale of drones, which resulted in a rupture in the relationship between Tel Aviv and Abu Dhabi.

The deal at the time was related to the sale of drones from an Israeli company to the UAE, in exchange for bilateral cooperation regarding Iran; after the failure of the deal, the channel said that “Bin Zayed was furious.”

But the good administration of Pardo, who tried to put out the fire between Tel Aviv and Abu Dhabi, in cooperation with his friends in the administration of former US President Barack Obama, resumed talks again through secret ways.

Prior to that, Israeli journalist Yossi Melman, who specializes in security affairs, revealed an enormous Israeli incursion into the UAE, through security companies, and said that their directors are current and former Mossad officials.

In an article published by the Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, on April 27, 2015, Melman confirmed that “some of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have become a hotbed for Israeli companies, which are said to have found a suitable environment to work in these communities, although they are usually described as conservative.”

After that, Pardo did not leave his position with Mohammed bin Zayed. Rather, he visited many times to the UAE, this culmination of a strategic partnership contract with the UAE cyber security sector through its emerging company.

A Haven for Mossad

Cooperation between the Emirates and Mossad officers in all fields is not a product of the moment, in recent years, Abu Dhabi has become a real haven for Israeli intelligence officers, according to Hebrew media.

On October 16, 2019, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz revealed that “Emirati security companies had hired former Israeli officers in the Mossad to pursue journalists and human rights activists.”

“The salaries offered by the Emirati company Dark Matter to Mossad officers amount to one million dollars annually,” it revealed.

Dark Matter was established in the capital, Abu Dhabi, in 2015, claiming that its main mission is limited to electronic defense, but media reports revealed that it provides hacking services for the Emirati intelligence.

In the same year, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (at the time) announced in media statements that “the Mossad helps him develop diplomatic and political relations with Arab and Islamic countries without naming them.”

Netanyahu reinforced this strategy by appointing Yossi Cohen to the position of head of the Mossad, which is known that he enjoys extensive relations with the rulers of the state in the UAE.

It is noteworthy that Cohen had gone to the UAE in August 2020 to meet with Bin Zayed to elaborate the details of the normalization agreement signed at the end of the year between Israel, the UAE and Bahrain.
